One can have his own preferences in art but we all agree that the most mysterious artist of the last century was Salvador Dali. His enigmatic works which dazzle spectators and heat their imagination can rarely be seen on display in Russia. For example, the Hermitage Museum planned to show several works of the famous artist in March 2014 but some technical difficulties kept the exhibition from being shown.
In St Petersburg there are many art galleries and centres in the city. One of them is situated in the former 19th century market area where they used to sell feathers for pillows and beds. Nowadays this art centre is a unique place to see art of celebrated artists such as Mark Chagall and Pablo Picasso. From the 2nd of October to the 21st of December 2014 the art centre on Dumskaya Street #4 has organized an exhibition dedicated to Dali as a graphic artist. Approximately 60 works from private European and American collectors will be shown on display. It took three years to prepare the exhibition, which is not surprising taking into account the rarity of the works.
Among the lithographs on display there will be 8 works from the illustrated suite Carmen created by Dali in 1968. Another rare work on display is the triptych »Trilogy of Love» — a masterpiece created in 1976 when the artist was 72 years old. This suite is a hymn to sublime love and each work represents a certain Tarot Card. One more series is dedicated to the novel of Lewis Carroll »Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.» Twelve colourful lithographs created between 1969 and 1984 will represent the series.
As the main curator of the art centre, Renata Koryakova, says »it is rather difficult to unravel the mystery of the works.» Dali didn’t create any portrait of the main heroine of the book. At the same time her presence can be traced in every lithograph of the series — it is a tiny girl with a jump rope.
