The Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art is the largest non-governmental contemporary museum in Russia and definitely one of the most exciting. The spectacularly restored five story building is separated into two parts – one is a gallery where the works are for sale and the other a museum tracing the history of Russian modern art during the last 60 years. Some of the works and installations on display at the Erarta Museum are truly monumental in size and will leave anyone interested in new Russian art swooning. The passionate curators are constantly updating their collections by travelling across Russia to find unknown future stars and track down old favorites from all periods and streams of the contemporary movement. Currently the Erarta Museum has around 2000 works so make sure you give yourself some time.
