On Friday June 12th Russia celebrates one of the main State holidays, “Russia Day.” This day marked the beginning the Russian Federation after the Soviet Union.
On the 12th of June 1990, the First Congress of People’s Deputies of the Russian Federation adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. The document announced the supremacy of the Constitution and its laws, the equality of all the citizens, political parties and social organizations.
During the celebrations people usually attend concerts and fireworks, which are organized in many cities all over the country. Outstanding Russian scientists, writers, and humanitarian workers receive State Awards from the President of Russia on this day. Most schools and public offices are closed on this day.
During the celebrations in St Petersburg the following events are going to take place:
At 4:00 pm on the Spit (Strelka) of Vasilyevsky Island a concert will start. Among the performers are young and promising local bands and singers.
In the central part of the city (the Park of the 300th anniversary of St Petersburg) at 1:00 pm entertainment centers will start to operate. Here will be organized sporting competitions. Among the special guests is the band Serebro (Silver) that represented Russia at the Eurovision contest in 2007.
In the Moscow district near the House of Soviets the concert “I love you, Russia!” will start at 3:00 pm.
Inside Peter and Paul Fortress it will be possible to try some Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Armenian, etc. cuisine. The festival “The national cuisine is the key to friendship” will start at 12:00 pm and will last for 7 hours.
On the embankment of the Crownwork canal a regatta “The Golden Oars” will take place at 5:00 pm.
